In the upper part of the mural, the street-scape flows into
an urban presence into an overhead view of a prominant corner
in Main and Cabot St in South Holyoke where the non profit urban
garden organization, Nuestras RaÌces and the Centro Agricola
Plaza is located.
This corner in real life consists of a greenhouse for growing
plants for the community gardens in the city, a mural designed
and created by the youth program, a pond, perennial and annual
plants, a community kitchen, a community library, and the home
of El Jardin Bakery and Mi Plaza Restaurant. There is also a
representation of the La Finquita, the community garden that
Nuestras RaÌces grew from.
In the upper and lower halves of this section, there are depictions
of the canal, factories, tenement houses now apartments, and
warehouses. In the lower part of the mural, the city scenery
flows into the canal, a historic symbol of the post industrial
paper mill days which the youth recreated into their idea of
transforming the unfunctional canals into a community space with
recreational activities like paddle boating. Luz Aldeco also
contributed her vision of a star shaped park. There are several
photo transfers incorporated into some of the buildings lining
the canal. One is an image of a store front mural painted by
Jesse Vega-Fry stating "There is no way to peace, peace
is the way."
