The first section of the mural, designed by
Mariangeles Soto-Diaz, Assistant Professor of Art at Hampshire
College is a multimedia rendition of the "Arts Map,"
a map guide to artistic and cultural sites created by Hampshire
Professor of Urban Studies that represents many places creative
community projects have occurred in Holyoke. Soto-Diaz used the
concept of the Arts Map as a literal translation of design and
color by using mirroring effects with reflection and repetition
that flows into the pictorial imagery of the Youth Vision of
Holyoke. The orange circles signify murals in the city and the
green circles community gardens. Throughout the map, there are
several photo overlays depicting sites in the city of Holyoke
some historical and others more current.
